Born in the East End of London within the sound of Bow Bells, Terry was ever the optimist and Cockney to the bone. He was a self-appointed comic, no audience too small. He made himself and anyone else lucky enough to be in the room, laugh.
At 15 he joined the British Army's Royal Corps of Signals and was stationed in Germany and Scotland. At 17 he came to America to be with his mother and step-dad. They lived in Marina Del Rey, California, where he
learned to surf and sail. After attaining his teaching credential in art and design ,he graduated cum laude at California State University, Long Beach with a Bachelors of Arts in Psychology.

He lived at Ragland, NZ where he gathered life-long friends and enjoyed epic surf. There he met Richard Mole, who brought him to Big Sur via Hawaii in 1980. He spent many winters on the north shore of Oahu surfing big waves at Waimea, Sunset and Pipeline, which led him to become a surf coach.
Terry followed in the footsteps of his grandfather White, an orthopedic shoemaker. He earned his nickname. "Hide." by creating his signature hand-stitched leather sandals. Known as " the seagull", he loved seafood and fishermen and stitched the bird in every pair of Hides. Terry loved mysteries and was an
enthrawling storyteller. What Happened to Shelock Homes ? was his first published book. He was a member of the Sherlock Society and went on to pen another novel which is a culmination of his life adventures , titled The Hook.
Terry was known for his handstands and broke his own swim record weeks before he passed. He was a caretaker for many years in Big Sur and created beautiful gardens and rockwork as well as many trails
leading down to the sea. He always had time for a cup of tea and to make "Hide" bread. He loved to feed friends and animals, especially the birds.
He met Rachel Moody when she was 16. Friends for 8 years before they teamed up as life partners, they shared legendary love and extraordinary adventures for another 25 years. They trekked in Nepal and
traveled to Thailand, Baja, New Zealand, Hawaii, and England. They built the Big Sur Garden Gallery in 1998, as well as built homes and communities in Big Sur and Hawaii.
